USS Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor

Today is the 75th anniversary of the surprise raid at Pearl Harbor.

We were attacked because another country’s leaders were convinced that if they hit us hard enough first that we would either not have the ability or not have the will to respond.

After so much time it’s easy to forget, but it’s too important a lesson – and one that was too expensive to learn. May we always remember, and may we never lead another country to that same wrong conclusion.

Veterans Day Flag - honoring all who serveIt’s Veterans Day in the United States today. In other parts of the world it’s called Armistice day since it’s celebrated on November 11th – the anniversary of the signing of the Armistice that ended World War I.

Wherever you are and whatever you call it, take a moment today to thank a veteran. Freedom is not free, and those who have served have made payment on behalf of all of us who enjoy the benefits of that freedom every day.

For those of you who have served – you have our sincere gratitude.

Thank you.

Congressional Medal of Honor (Army)Army Staff Sergeant Salvatore Giunta was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor today. He is the first living recipient of the award since 1976.

In the midst of an active firefight in which he was shot two times Staff Sergeant Giunta rescued his fellow soldier, Sergeant Josh Brennan, from two Taliban fighters. Killing one and wounding the second, Sergeant Giunta freed Sergeant Brennan and administered first aid. Unfortunately, Sergeant Brennan ultimately died from the wounds he had received. In addition to Sergeant Brennan, the squad also lost medic Hugo Mendoza of El Paso in that fight. Yes, the enemy we’re fighting in this war will shoot clearly identified medics.

Our congratulations and thanks to Sergeant Giunta for his service and bravery. Our gratitude and condolences to the families of Sergeant Brennan and Specialist Mendoza.

This video celebrates the history of the Marines, with special attention to those who fought in the battle at the Chosin reservoir. As said in the video, “freedom is not free, but the United States Marines Corps will pay most of your share”.

Semper Fidelis. Thank you all so much for your service.
