Texas Flag with BuildingOn March 2, 1836, Texas earned its freedom from Mexico – becoming an independent nation.

The independence came after the Battle of San Jacinto, thanks to the victory of General Sam Houston and his men. That battle followed the stand at the Alamo, where Colonel William Barret Travis and his men valiantly tried to hold off a force many times their size.

Before his death at the Alamo, Colonel Travis sent one last letter, that read in part:

I call on you in the name of Liberty, of patriotism & everything dear to the American character, to come to our aid, with all dispatch … If this call is neglected, I am determined to sustain myself as long as possible & die like a soldier who never forgets what is due to his own honor & that of his country— Victory or Death.

Because of that spirit the words “Remember the Alamo” still carry enormous weight for millions of Texans. What we do matters, the end result matters, but why we do it and how we do it matters too.

At iMGA we’re proud to be Texans, proud of our heritage and independence, and proud to work with great independent agents across the state. Especially today we wanted to take just a moment to say so.

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. — That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.

These words, immortalized on a document signed by 56 men 238 years ago, and backed up by the selfless sacrifices of thousands of militiamen and citizens, changed history in ways no one could have expected.

We’ll close the office at 1pm tomorrow and be off on Friday in order to take some time to remember their impact.

Independence came with a big cost to the 56 signers of the Declaration of Independence.

It came with a cost to the thousands of farmers, lawyers and tradesmen who fought in the Revolutionary War.

As we celebrate with friends and family we at iMGA want to take a minute to remember that our independence still comes at a very real cost.

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. — That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.

234 years ago this Sunday 58 men signed that Declaration and pledged their lives, fortunes and sacred honor to earn those rights for their fellow citizens.

So, our office will be closed starting noon today and will reopen on Tuesday.

We’ll use much of the time to watch parades and fireworks and enjoy some backyard grilling and time with family. But we’ll also take some time to reflect on the amazing heritage our founding fathers left, how fortunate we are to be here, and what a responsibility we have to continue and not squander that heritage.

Of course our system will still be up and able to quote and bind policies and post payments as needed during that time.
