Archives for holidays

white houseToday is the day we celebrate the Presidents of the United States. Most specifically we celebrate George Washington (whose birthday was February 22) and Abraham Lincoln (whose birthday was February 12).

So as much as some people spend lots of money to convince us that today is the perfect day to honor our presidents by getting a great deal on a Honda or Toyota, we think it’s probably a better day to think about our country and its history.

“Government is not reason; it is not eloquence; it is force. Like fire, it is a dangerous servant and a fearful master.” – George Washington

America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves. – Abraham Lincoln

Always bear in mind that your own resolution to succeed is more important than any other. – Abraham Lincoln

It is time to restore the American precept that each individual is accountable for his actions. – Ronald Reagan

So, today, take a moment to think about how fortunate we are to live in a country with the history and freedoms we have, and then go out with resolution to succeed. It is that personal responsibility, that accountability for our own actions, that independent contribution of every citizen that has made this country’s impact on the world so outsized in comparison to its population and resources.

However you spend the day – have a great one!

In Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania every Groundhog Day up to 40,000 people gather to see if Punxsutawney Phil, the world’s most famous groundhog, will see his shadow. If he does, then tradition says we’ll have 6 more weeks of winter and people can prepare accordingly.

A large crowd on Groundhog Day.
Do you have a “groundhog” in your agency? An early indicator that lets you know what to expect – and how to prepare for the future as a result. If not, think back over the last few years. When has your business gone up? When has it gone down? What preceded those changes?

Have a Groundhog

Managing a high-growth independent insurance agency is much easier if you have just a couple specific leading indicators you always watch. Not your sales or cash (those are lagging indicators – by the time they’re dropping there’s already a problem somewhere much earlier in your sales funnel). For many insurance agencies it might be something like the number of incoming phone calls, number of new quotes issued or number of inquiries via your web site. Whatever it is, make sure you have one. It can make the difference between having the time to prepare and being caught by surprise.

In our business there are several, but a couple that are much more reliable than others. Which brings us to the other important step.

Make Sure Your Groundhog is Accurate

Punxsutawney Phil has seen his shadow nearly 100 times, has not seen it 15 times, and nine years are unaccounted for, but his prediction as to whether there will be six more weeks of winter or not only has an accuracy rating of 39 per cent. That’s not very reliable. In fact it would make more sense to see his prediction and do the opposite.

So, look for those leading indicators in your agency, but always test the results against expectations. Otherwise you may find yourself in for a very long winter.

Our agents and partners have helped make this a very Merry Christmas and a great first year for the entire iMGA team. We look forward to making things even better together next year.

In lieu of spending money on printed cards and postage, we elected to donate $500 to Safe Place in Austin.  Safe Place provides safety for individuals and families affected by sexual and domestic violence so they can move beyond being defined by the crimes committed against them.  Safe Place also promotes safe and healthy relationships for the prevention of sexual and domestic violence, and works with others to create change in attitudes, behaviors and policies that perpetuate acceptance of, and impact our understanding and responses to, sexual and domestic violence.

If you are interested in learning more about Safe Place, visit the Safe Place web site.

May you and your loved ones have a Very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!!!

Tomorrow’s Thanksgiving Day here in the U.S.

It’s a great holiday. It features a fantastic meal and we get to slow down a little and take some time with family and friends.

The best thing about it is the focus, though – on giving thanks.

This year in particular we at iMGA have much be thankful for:

  • We have a team that really understands our mission to make things easy for agents and have fun at the same time.
  • We have carriers and advisors that understand Texas personal property.
  • We have over 3,000 satisfied customers, growing every day.

Mostly, though, we are thankful for you, our agents. You make this possible, worthwhile, and fun.

Thank you.

Regardless of its heritage as All Saint’s Eve or All Hallow’s Eve, Halloween in modern America is a community experience.

In our neighborhood, as in many across the country, children and parents will walk the streets together. Neighbors will greet each other by name or at least recognize each other by sight.

That sense of community is important, as is a sense of fun. So this weekend, have some fun, spend some time with family and friends, and just maybe, carve a pumpkin. 🙂

Labor Day can be bittersweet. On the bitter side it marks the traditional end of summer. In most of Texas kids are back in school and the vacation season is over. On the sweet side, it’s the first weekend of dove hunting season.

We’d like to take a moment, though, and recognize Labor Day for what it once was, and should be – a chance to thank those whose productive efforts have made our economy and country the success it is.

Of course our national economy is going through a tough patch right now. But at iMGA we have the privilege and pleasure to work with smart, talented, hard-working people every day, and it’s you that makes the difference.

The independent insurance agent is a critical part of the small business universe, and the independent agencies we work with are the best. iMGA’s mission is to bring you new products, streamlined processes and world-class systems to make your life as EASY as possible – because we truly appreciate you and the work you do.

So, as we take an extra day off Monday (and we hope you are able to as well), we will be thinking of you and the incredible result of the labor of so many productive and talented people.

Thank You – and Happy Labor Day!

All of us at iMGA would like to take a moment to wish all of the fathers in our community a very happy Father’s Day.

It’s often a thankless job – nobody says “Hi Dad” at a football game. And – personally speaking at least – we know some kids can make it a difficult one. But a great dad can make a difference for generations.

So, on this special day we are grateful for the reminder to say:

“Thanks, Dad!”

This is Memorial Day weekend in the U.S. Our office, like most, will close at noon today and be closed all day Monday.

For many, unfortunately, the focus is on the three-day weekend, the unofficial start of the summer holiday season, and activities like boating, picnics and barbecues. While we enjoy all of these, we never want to lose sight of the reason for Memorial Day.

It is the day to remember those who sacrificed their lives for our freedom.

So, sometime this weekend, if at all possible please do one or more of the following:

  • Place a flag on the grave of a fallen hero.
  • Attend a Memorial Day parade.
  • Sit with family and friends and talk about the sacrifices made for us.
  • Watch a show on one or more of the many tragic battles needed for our freedom.
  • Read an article about a single soldier/airman/marine/guardsman who made the ultimate sacrifice.
  • Just stop for a moment and think about how different things would be without the sacrifices made.

Our world and our country are far from perfect. Our leaders make numerous mistakes. But without the lives given in service and defense of our country over the last 234 years, we – and the world – would be so much poorer in so many ways. This one weekend at least let’s try to keep that top of mind.

Sunday is Mother’s Day, and all of us at iMGA appreciate the reminder to take just a moment out of an otherwise hectic week to recognize all the fantastic Mothers we know and everyone else who makes our lives richer and more rewarding.
So whether you take a minute to bask in the appreciation or to pass it on to one of the Mothers in your life, or both, our wish is for a great weekend for you and yours.
